San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner!

Con season has started up again, and we are in full swing. After WonderCon is over, it is always difficult not to begin the countdown for San Diego Comic Con. Definitely the largest convention of it’s kind, the San Diego event draws thousands of fans every year to the Gas Lamp district. I remember my first comic con and it was at the Shriner’s Auditorium. The booths were merely tables loaded with boxes of comics or VHS tapes. There would be only a few celebrity appearances, consisting mostly of comic book artists and voice over actors. It is easy to say things have changed. As the convention grew, the fandom grew along with it. Comic Con type shows happen in nearly all 50 states, with fans ready to spend their hard earned cash.

I have been lucky enough to attend numerous shows over the years, mostly while volunteering for the Hollywood Sci Fi Museum or just writing for PwnedByGirls. The excitement and planning often involve months of serious effort, building my cosplays, and saving up the cash for the trip! Attending conventions can be quite expensive, but each year is worth the investment. I often encourage fans to attend the comic conventions in their hometowns to prepare themselves for the big show! The crowds can be overwhelming to say the least.

The last Comic Con in San Diego was quite awesome. My favorite booth was the Microsoft booth showcasing Gears of War 4. Being a massive fan of the series, I was quite disappointed that there was no playable version of the game at e3. The Microsoft team totally made up for that at Comic Con, and I made my friends endure the wait so that I could play prior to it’s release. It did not disappoint. As I was playing, a fan came by to say hello and ask for a photo with me. After we snapped his photo, I made sure he got a photo of me playing the game!

Another booth I absolutely loved was sponsored by the History channel. Vikings is one of my favorite shows, so I jumped at the chance to enjoy their experience. The word ENJOY doesn’t exactly describe the emotions I felt. As we stepped into a circular room, the door quickly closed behind us and the room went dark. After just a moment, our senses were peaked by flashing lights and sprays of mist. As the room was lit up by each flash, I quickly learned we were surrounded by massive snakes! They were inside of a glass enclosure that completely surrounded us. Panic set in and once the “experience’ was over, I needed a hug from the hot guy who ran the booth. I was mortified. But alas, what did I expect from a Vikings experience?

As the next Comic Con approaches, my expectations rise and the excitement continues to grow. Be sure to check out our entire gallery of  photos from San Diego Comic Con 2017.

Our trip to San Diego Comic Con

sdcc_small_05Every year, we all wait for the big one. The biggest Comic Convention of the year… San Diego Comic Con. Due to all of my awesome volunteer work with the Hollywood Sci Fi Museum, I am lucky to be one of the chosen few volunteers who actually gets to attend SDCC. With my great friends Penny Lane, Tyler, Karina, and head of the museum Huston, we all work tirelessly to help raise donations for the upcoming mecca of sci fi, the Hollywood Sci Fi Museum. This year we had an incredible replica of Doctor Who’s Tardis for attendees to take their photo in. It was definitely a lot of fun.

Each day of the show, I wore a different cosplay outfit. Thursday I was Lady Link, which I made myself. Friday I wore a latex nurse Harley Quinn, thanks to my pal Penny. We swapped costumes for the day, and she wore my Catwoman catsuit, which she looked quite hot in! I saved my favorite cosplay for Saturday. I worked for weeks and weeks on my Ciri cosplay and I was so proud to showcase it at SDCC. I made everything from my sword to my tunic! I did get a little help sanding wood, lol, from Chris and my girl Michelle. It was definitely a lot of work, but it was well worth the payoff. To have people approach me, recognizing my character and commending my crafty work, made me feel incredible. A true highlight was running into the only other Witcher I saw at the con… a great Geralt and Triss! I was stoked to get the three of us together for a photo.

sdcc_small_01Besides all of the cosplay action and volunteer work, I definitely had a complete fangirl moment. The museum booth is often lucky enough to have famously talented actors and voice actors from different shows, movies, and even video games. John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender from Futurama as well as Jake from Adventure Time, just so happens to be the voice of MARCUS FENIX!!!! Yes! My true love from Gears of War, Marcus Fenix, whom I’ve also listed as one of my top five bangable video game characters, was sitting in front of me! I saw his character photo on the table and realized he was the voice. I instantly went into girly mode and got very excited! It was cool to see the look on John’s face when he could see I was a true fan of his work. In an instant, John began to do Marcus’ voice and I melted. He started doing one of the typical lines where Marcus is setting up the attack plan at the beginning of a mission. The cool part was when he said “Alana You’re coming with me!” It was right out of the game! Truly a moment I will never forget.

All in all, Comic Con kicked major butt for me this year. I love running into my favorite cosplay pals. Seeing Ela Darling and Sinn Sage was great! I had an amazing time with friends, and even had a cute boy reject me hahahaha There’s a first for everything right? Good times. And if that cute boy Dallas ever reads this… you’ve still got my number hahaha!

Wonder Con 2015

Traveling to the different shows is a huge hobby for the ladies at PwnedByGirls. This year we went to WonderCon in Anaheim, California during Easter weekend. Here are our awesome photos from the show!
